Sikh Calendar 2021: Nanakshahi Calendar

Nanakshahi Calendar is a solar calendar used by the followers of Sikhism to calculate the dates for religious, cultural, and at times, administrative events. It is based on “Barah Maha”, translated as “Twelve Months” and created by the Gurus. As per the Sikh Calendar 2021, the year begins with the Sikh Month Chet, corresponding to 14th March as per Gregorian Calendar. The Nanakshahi Calendar commenced after the birth of the Divine Guru Nanak Dev Ji in the year 1469 CE. This is why the Sikh Calendar called Nanakshahi Calendar is named after Guru Nanak Dev Ji, also known to be the founder of Sikhism.

Shaheed Bhagat Singh Martyrdom Day

One of the popular Sikh Holidays 2021 is Shaheed Bhagat Singh Martyrdom Day, which is observed with great passion and respect in several regions of Punjab as well as all over India. This event marks the day when the legend Bhagat Singh was martyred after he rebelled against the British Colonial Government and bravely fought for Freedom. His death anniversary is observed annually by people of the Sikh Community.


The occasion of Maghi was chosen by the Sri Guru Amar Das Ji for the followers of Sikhism to attend the Gurudwara and commemorate the legendary “Battle of Muktsar”.

Guru Gobind Singh Ji Jayanti

Pahila Prakash Sri Guru Granth Sahib Ji

Bandi Chhor Divas

It was on this very day that Guru Hargobind Singh Ji, the Sixth Guru, was released from prison. He was held captive by Mughal Emperor Jehangir after he rescued 52 Hindu Kings and was released after. Guru Nanak Gurpurab

Martyrdom Of the Sahibzade

Known to be one of the highly respected 2021 Sikh Holidays as per Sikh Calendar 2021, the Martyrdom of the Sahibzade (all four elder and younger brothers) commemorates the day when all four sons of Guru Gobind Singh Ji, Ajit Singh, Jujhar Singh, Sahibzade Zorawar Singh and Fateh Singh were martyred by Mughal soldiers, with the former two being killed in the Battle of Chamkaur, and the latter two executed.
