The Hijri year refers to the era which began from the Islamic New Year in 622 AD/CE. This year holds its importance as it was when the Islamic God Muhammad with his followers migrated from Mecca to Yathrib, which is today’s Medina according to Islamic Calendar 2020. It was the year when Prophet Muhammad established the first Muslim community known as Ummah in an event. This led to the turning point in the World and Islamic history as a foundation of the first Muslim city-state was laid.

Hijri Calendar is a Lunar based calendar which consists of 12 months in a year just like the English calendar. The movement of the lunar cycle determines the months in the calendar. God in Islam is named as Allah and all the auspicious events that are related to Allah determine the important dates in the calendar. Every month in the Muslim calendar begins when the new moon is seen. The first day of Islamic New Year is the day of Muharram. 2020 is the 1441 year in the Hijri calendar. Islamic Calendar 2020: Islamic Calendar Festivals

There are some festivals which hold a lot of importance in Islam. Islamic Calendar 2020 explains that these festivals are celebrated worldwide as the most auspicious events by Muslims. They are a way for people to fulfill their wishes for a happy life. Some of the most important days in the Islamic Calendar 2020 are:

  • Eid Al-Fitr

This festival was originated by the Islamic Prophet Muhammad and is celebrated as the end of Ramadan which is the Islamic holy month of fasting. It is marked as the first day of the Islamic month named as Shawwal which comes after the month of Ramadan. According to the history when Prophet Muhammad went to Medina people used to celebrate two specific days in the year which they said were the days of merriment in their lives. It was after that he declared two days as the days of happiness which are Eid Al-Fitr and Eid Al-Adha celebrated till date.

After a month of fasting, people celebrate the new month with the Eid prayer which is known as salat and consists of two units known as rakats. The prayer is offered in an open field. It is forbidden to fast on this day and there is an obligation to do some act of charity this day and take care of the needy. After the prayers are completed, there is a gathering just like done in Eid Al-Adha where some special sweets which are exclusively made on this day are cooked and served to the guests and family. This festival will be celebrated on 24th May as mentioned in Islamic Calendar 2020.

  • Eid Al-Ad

The word id means “festival” and adhan means “sacrifice”. This is one of the most important festivals of Muslims which is celebrated worldwide. This is the 10th day of Dhu al-Hijjah. It is also known as the “Festival of sacrifice”. It shows the importance of God’s command for a man. It embarks the event when Ibrahim sacrificed his son as an act of willof of the will to God’s command. This event holds a lot of importance in the history of Islam when God provided a lamb to sacrifice instead of Ibrahim’s son. The lamb after the sacrifice was divided into three parts out of which one was given to needy people, the second part was kept at home and the third part was given to the relatives. This has a teaching in itself.

Devotees offer prayers at the mosque. The prayer is performed at any time after the sun completely rises up before entering the Zuhr time. After the prayers, Muslims exchange greetings and gifts are given to friends and family. Friends and family are invited for the grand feast in which the lamb is cooked and shared with everyone who comes for the feast. The halal domestic animal (lamb, goat, sheep or cow) resemble Abraham’s willingness to sacrifice his only son to god. The meat of the animal is also divided into three parts just like Abraham did like the first part given to the people including relatives and friends, the second part eaten by the family and the third part given to the poor and needy people. People get dressed in their best clothes and special sweets are also cooked by women. This festival will be celebrated on 31st July as mentioned in Islamic Calendar 2020.

According to the beliefs, fasting is done to commemorate the first revelation of the Quran to Muhammad. While fasting from dawn to sunset, Muslims are not allowed to have food, drinking liquids, smoking or engaging in sexual relations.
