According to Annaprashan Muhurat 2021, out of all the sixteen rites mentioned in Hindu scriptures, Annaprashan Sanskar is considered the seventh most important Sanskar. During this ceremony, the child is offered solid foods such as rice other than his/her mother’s milk for the first time ever under proper administration according to Hindu customs.
It is believed that the physical and mental development of the child before the Annaprashan Ceremony depends only on the milk provided by the mother. However after this rite is performed, their overall development depends majorly on solids. This is why this ritual is performed for the first time after birth with great enthusiasm with an objective of introducing the child to grains, solid foods and cereals.

To perform Annaprashan Sanskar in 2021, a priest or an expert thoroughly assesses the birth chart of the child as well as the placement of nakshatras and planets and calculates an auspicious muhurat to perform the ceremony. This is known as Annaprashan Sanskar Muhurat. According to popular beliefs, the Annaprashan Sanskar Muhurat of a child should be done within the six months of his/her birth.
As per Hinduism, the baby is fed only sattvic and nutritious food for the first time. It is said that this sattvic food offers the child a healthy life and helps him/her develop physically and mentally while eliminating every disease and illness. Everyone present during the Annaprashan Sanskar Ceremony wishes the child a good and healthy life, strength and intelligence and offers him/her their blessings.
According to the Hindu scriptures, it is considered necessary to perform every significant task or ceremony during an auspicious muhurat for fruitful results. In the same way, Annaprashan Ceremony should also be performed during a special muhurat after consulting either an astrologer or priest, as it is believed that good qualities are generated in the children if such rites are carried out under a shubh muhurat.
Also, this ceremony helps purify all the elements that went into the stomach of the children before birth and enables a child to lead a healthy life. It has been observed that when the child is in the womb, the mother can sometimes consume food which can prove to be harmful for her unborn child. In such a situation, these rites are very effective in keeping the children away from all the demerits inherited from their mother.

Food provides energy and power to a human being. You will find several mentions highlighting the importance of food in many mythological legends as well. One of them is related to Mahabharata. According to that mythological legend, during the ongoing war of Mahabharata, when Bhishma Pitamah was lying on the bed of arrows and breathing his last breath, all the Pandavas used to visit him daily to listen to his sermons. The Pandavas used to listen to many stories related to Dharma from Pitamah.
In the same light, while he was preaching life lessons to the Pandavas, all of a sudden Draupadi started laughing after listening to him. Everyone was shocked to see Draupadi laughing like this, in the meantime Pitamah asked Draupadi the reason for her laughter. Draupadi then replied, ‘Pitamah, all these lessons and preachings about Dharma and Knowledge sounds good but where was it when I was being violated by the Kauravas in front of the entire assembly during the Cheer Haran? Why didn’t you reach all these lessons at that time in the assembly? I started laughing just by remembering the same thing.'
Listening to Draupadi, Bhishma Pitamah said, 'Daughter! I was consuming the food provided by the Kauravas at that time. Therefore, just like Duryodhana with his vicious nature, my mind and heart got contaminated and affected. But Arjuna's arrows in the battlefield shed all of the malicious blood running inside my body. After being purified, my mind, heart and soul are pure. This is why I am talking about Dharma.”
