Founded in the year 2007, funded by Zee Entertainment Enterprises, ICL (Indian Cricket League) could not gain the approval of BCCI as it was considered a rival by them. Later in September, a 20-20 cricket competition with the name IPL started in April 2008. It was accepted by BCCI as it was a franchise based league.
Vice President of BCCI, Mr Lalit Modi is termed as the mastermind behind the format, revenue model and success of IPL. It is regulated by a body comprising 7 members. Though it wasn’t a spontaneous reaction to the concept of ICL, the motivation for IPL was taken from the Premier League of England and NBA (USA).
