Vidyarambham Muhurat 2020

A shloka in the ancient scriptures about the Vidyarambham Sanskar 2020 goes:

विद्यया लुप्यते पापं विद्ययाडयुः प्रवर्धते।
विद्यया सर्वसिद्धिः स्याद्धिद्ययामृतश्नुते।।

vidyayā lupyate pāpaṃ vidyayāḍayuḥ pravardhate।
vidyayā sarvasiddhiḥ syāddhidyayāmṛtaśnute।।

It means that when one reads all that the Vedas have to offer, it abolishes all their sins, increases their age, helps them obtain all Siddhis, and goes so far as to make actual Amrit (nectar of immortality) available to them. The Shastras say that a person who does not learn or does not obtain knowledge, has to remain deprived of the results of all four: Dharma, Artha, Kama, Moksha (religion, money, work, salvation respectively).

Thus, the Vidyarambham Sanskar 2020 is an essential part of a child’s initiation into studies. During the ceremony, after a havan and eulogising Lord Ganesha and Goddess Saraswati, the deities of knowledge, parents help their toddler write for the first time. The methods differ from place to place but more often than not, children write ‘Om’ in Sanskrit or their mother tongue. The mode of writing can be a slate and chalk, an energized quill and paper, or even their hands and a plate of wheat or rice. But the most important factor is that all this is done under an auspicious Vidyarambh Muhurat 2020.

Vidyarambham Sanskar 2020

The ceremony, under the Vidyarambh Muhurat 2020, begins with the worship of Lord Ganesh, Goddess Saraswati, notebook, pen, inkwell, and the child’s mentor or a coconut symbolising their guru. The same occurs as below:

Vidyarambh Muhurat 2020: Ganesha Puja

Lord Ganesha is the God of Knowledge and should always be worshipped first, as per the rules of Hinduism. For this reason, the ceremony during Vidyarambh Muhurat 2020 begins with paying homage to Lord Ganpati.

First of all, place Akshat, flowers, and roli in the toddler’s hands and help them offer these in front of Lord Ganesha while chanting the following mantra:

ॐ विद्यां संवर्धयिष्यामि
oṃ vidyāṃ saṃvardhayiṣyāmi

Now, the priest will chant the given mantra and ask the toddler to once again offer Akshat and flowers to the God of wisdom. They will ask Lord Ganpati to bless the child and ask that he/she become brilliant and meritorious.

oṃ gaṇānāṃ tvā gaṇapati havāmahe, priyāṇāṃ tvā priyapati havāmahe, nidhīnāṃ tvā
nidhipati havāmahe, vasomama।

āhamajāni gabhardhamātvamajāsi gabhardham। oṃ gaṇapataye namaḥ। āvāhayāmi,
sthāpayāmi, dhyāyāmi॥

Vidyarambh Muhurat 2020: Saraswati Puja

Goddess Saraswati is the deity of art, knowledge, and compassion. Thus, we pray to the Goddess and ask her to bless the child. The ceremony in the Vidyarambh Muhurat 2020 begins with placing Akshat, flowers, and roli in the toddler’s hands. They will now offer these in front of Goddess Saraswati while chanting the mantra:

ॐ कलां संवेदनशीलतां वर्धयिष्यामि।
oṃ kalāṃ saṃvedanaśīlatāṃ vardhayiṣyāmi

Now praying to the Goddess, once again, the priest asks the child to offer Akshat and flowers to the goddess while chanting the following mantra:

ॐ पावका नः सरस्वती वाजेभिर्वाजिनीवती। यज्ञं वष्टु धियावसुः॥
ॐ सरस्वत्यै नमः। आवाहयामि स्थापयामि, ध्यायामि॥

oṃ pāvakā naḥ sarasvatī vājebhirvājinīvatī। yajñaṃ vaṣṭu dhiyāvasuḥ
oṃ sarasvatyai namaḥ। āvāhayāmi sthāpayāmi, dhyāyāmi

Those present will ask Maa to bless the child with intelligence, education, and talent and wish that her grace may stay with them always.

Vidyarambh Muhurat 2020 Dates: Equipments Puja

Almost everything is sacred in Hinduism, and for that reason, during the ceremony in Vidyarambh Muhurat 2020, after Ganesh and Saraswati puja, we move to worship the equipment necessary in acquiring knowledge. These incorporate the major three items, namely; pen, notebook, and inkwell. The Sanskar continues as once again, the priest places the Akshat and flowers in the child’s hands and help him/her offer them to these things on the altar while chanting the following mantra:

ॐ विद्यासंसाधनमहत्त्वं स्वीकरिष्ये।
oṃ vidyāsaṃsādhanamahattvaṃ svīkariṣye

  1. Lekhni Puja (Pen)

A pen or quill (kalam) is a crucial part of attaining knowledge because that is what we use to write. Thus, the toddler pays homage to the pen while the priest chants the following mantra:

ॐ पुरुदस्मो विषुरूपऽ इन्दुः अन्तमर्हिमानमानंजधीरः।
एकपदीं द्विपदीं त्रिपदीं चतुष्पदीम्, अष्टापदीं भुवनानु प्रथन्ता स्वाहा।

oṃ purudasmo viṣurūpa' induḥ antamarhimānamānaṃjadhīraḥ।
ekapadīṃ dvipadīṃ tripadīṃ catuṣpadīm, aṣṭāpadīṃ bhuvanānu prathantā svāhā।

At this time, one prays to the Goddess Dhriti of interest and asks that the child becomes very interested in his/her studies.

  1. Dawat Puja (Inkwell)

A quill is nothing without the inkwell, as only the latter allows one to write with the former. Thus, the child pays homage to the inkwell with the following mantra:

ॐ देवीस्तिस्रस्तिस्रो देवीवर्योधसं, पतिमिन्द्रमवद्धर्यन्।
जगत्या छन्दसेन्दि्रय शूषमिन्द्रे, वयो दधद्वसुवने वसुधेयस्य व्यन्तु यज॥

oṃ devīstisrastisro devīvaryodhasaṃ, patimindramavaddharyan।
jagatyā chandasendiraya śūṣamindre, vayo dadhadvasuvane vasudheyasya vyantu yaja॥

At this time, one prays to the Goddess Pushti of concentration and asks that the child is able to focus on his/her studies single-mindedly.

  1. Patti Puja (Notebook)

After the quill and ink, comes the last part of the trio - the notebook. One can only write with the pen if they have something to write on. This is where the Patti or papers come in, and the toddler pays homage to it with the following mantra:

ॐ सरस्वती योन्यां गर्भमन्तरश्विभ्यां, पतनी सुकृतं बिभर्ति।
अपारसेन वरुणो न साम्नेन्द्र, श्रियै जनयन्नप्सु राजा॥

oṃ sarasvatī yonyāṃ garbhamantaraśvibhyāṃ, patanī sukṛtaṃ bibharti।
apārasena varuṇo na sāmnendra, śriyai janayannapsu rājā॥

At this time, one prays to the Goddess Tushti of hard work and asks that the child is able to work as hard as their studies require.

Vidyarambh Muhurat 2020 Dates: Guru Puja

Our mentors are an essential part of our lives because they teach us everything and help us stand on our own feet. We take their teachings with us throughout life and incorporate them into everything we do. Thus, since our teacher is a significant part of our education, really half of it, the child also pays homage to their Guru during the ceremony at Vidyarambh Muhurat 2020. Similar to the rest of the pujas; the toddler takes Akshat and flowers in their hands and offers it to their guru (or coconut if the teacher is not present). If the teacher is not near, then first they will set a coconut as a symbol for their guru. Then while offering the aforementioned, they chant the following mantra:

ॐ आचार्यनिष्ठां वर्धयिष्यामि।
oṃ ācāryaniṣṭhāṃ vardhayiṣyāmi

Now, the child is expected to treat their mentor as a parent, giving them the same respect. Simultaneously, the guru is also supposed to work with the toddler as their own child, offering them all the knowledge they can impart. Afterwards, the priest will chant below mantra and ask the toddler to offer Akshat and flowers to their teacher once again.

oṃ bṛhaspate ati yadayor', ahārddyumadvibhāti kratumajjaneṣu, yaddīdayacchavasa' ṛtaprajāta, tadasmāsu draviṇaṃ dhehi citram।
upayāmagṛhīto'si bṛhaspataye, tvaiṣa te yonibṛrhaspataye tvā॥ oṃ śrī gurave namaḥ। āvāhayāmi, sthāpayāmi, dhyāyāmi।

Vidyarambh Muhurat 2020: Writing For The First Time

With this, the end and the most significant part of the ceremony approaches. Now, the priest or the parents, or the guru of the child will help them write either ‘Om’ or the Gayatri Mantra, or part of it with the worshipped pen and ink on the paper. Sometimes, this writing is done by the child’s finger on a plate full of wheat or rice grains; while at other times/places, this is done under the sun’s rays, on the sand. Each of these procedures has a particular meaning behind it. One usually writes either of the following on the paper:

–––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––

  1. oṃ
  2. oṃ bhūrbhuvaḥ svaḥ
  3. oṃ bhūrbhuvaḥ suvaḥ tatsaviturvareṇyaṃ।
bhargo devasyadhīmahi dhiyo yo naḥ pracodayāt ॥

With this, we pray that knowledge awakens in the child, and he/she incorporates the three characteristics defined in oṃ bhūrbhuvaḥ svaḥ, which are:

Bhū meaning hard work and labour;

Bhuvaḥ signifying restraint and abstinence; and

Svaḥ indicating intellect and wisdom.
