The festival of chhat Puja is dedicated to the lord sun. Chhat Puja is celebrated with immense devotion and joy in the various parts of India, especially Bihar. Chhat Pooja is performed on the day of Kartik Shukla shasti i.e. the 6th day of the month of Kartik in the Hindu calendar. It is an ancient Hindu festival and the only festival that is dedicated to the sun. It is celebrated exactly 6 days after the festival of Diwali. It is the festival in which devotees pay salutations to the rising as well as setting sun and to praise him various chhat songs or geet are sung. For a day and night people stay at the banks of the river or any other water source nearby where rituals are performed and offerings are made to the sun.

The venue of this festival is the bank of the river. The Puja is considered as a means to thank the sun for showering life on earth. Sun the force of life that helps in sustaining life on earth, promote well-being prosperity and well being. The rituals of this festival are observed for over a period of four days. The rituals include holy bathing, fasting and not drinking water for the whole day, standing in water for long period of time and offering Prasad and “argh” to the rising and setting sun and singing chhat songs in order to revere the solar deity.
