Bandi Chhor Divas

As per Punjab Holidays 2020 list, Bandi Chhor Divas coincides with famous Hindu festival Diwali, and is observed as the Day of Liberation. As per mythological legends, Guru Hargobind, the sixth Sikh Guru, was released by the Mughal Emperor Jahangir from the jail on this day. This is why this day is celebrated as the Bandi Chor Diwas. On this day, the Gurudwaras are decorated with lights and diyas, people meet their family members and loved ones and share happy moments. Houses are decorated, and feasts are prepared.

Guru Nanak Jayanti or Guru Purab

Guru Nanak Jayanti, commonly known as Gurpurab, commemorates the birth of the first Sikh Guru Guru Nanak. This is celebrated by the Sikhs with great fervour and enthusiasm. This day is observed as a gazetted holiday in India. Celebrations start from early-morning, when Aasa-Ki-Vaar or morning hymns are recited. Then the Katha is chanted, following which Langar is conducted at the Gurudwara.

Vaisakhi

Vaisakhi, also known as Baisakhi is a religious festival observed by SIkha and Hindus in Punjab. According to Punjab Holidays 2020, It falls on 14 April this year, and is one of the major Punjabi festivals. This day marks the formation of Khalsa panth under Guru Gobind Singh. Devotees recite the Amritbani Guru Ravidass Ji and organize Nagar Kirtan or street procession while carrying out the portrait of the Guru. devotees from all over the world take part in the ritual and perform the holy bath.

S. Bhagat Singh's Martyrdom Day

March 23 is yearly observed as Shaheed Diwas or Martyrs Day and honours great freedom fighter Shaheed Bhagat Singh, Shivaram Rajguru and Sukhdev Thapar. These men fought against the Britishers and sacrificed their lives for the freedom of the country. Hence on this day, they are honoured and excerpts of their bravery are remembered and recited.

Sant Guru Kabir Jayanti

Sant Kabir Jayanti celebrates the birth of Kabir Das, a celebrated poet, social reformer and saint. The followers of the Saint recite poems and literary transcripts created by him, and pay homage. Various seminars and get-togethers are held at different academic universities, where his preachings are shared.

Shaheed Udham Singh's Martyrdom Day

Shaheed Udham Singh’s Martyrdom Day is a regional public holiday in Punjab, and solemnizes the martyrdom of Udham Singh. Udham Singh was a patriotic revolutionary who assassinated Michael O' Dwyer, the former lieutenant of Punjab, as revenge for the massacre of Jallianwala Bagh.

Parkash Utsav Sri Guru Granth Sahib Ji

Parkash Utsav Sri Guru Granth Sahib Ji is observed as a regional holiday by the natives of Punjab, and memorializes the first opening ceremony or “prakash” of the sacred book, the Guru Granth Sahib, at the Golden Temple, Amritsar, in 1604.

Baba Sri Chand Ji Jayanti

Baba Sri Chand Ji Jayanti marks the birth anniversary of Sri Chand, the eldest son of Guru Nanak and founder of the hermetic Udasi sect. This day is marked as a public holiday in Punjab. On this day, people remember his preachings and recite his writings.
