Before we go any further, first let us understand what an Eclipse is. Once we understand it better, we will be able to understand the upcoming things with more clarity. An eclipse, as used in common usage, is an astronomical occurrence in which one planetary body temporarily and partially obscures another. This results from the Earth, Moon, and Sun's orbital movements, which lead them to occasionally overlap and move in accordance with their positions. We are all well aware that the Sun illuminates both our planet and a portion of the Moon. However, sometimes, due to specific planetary movements, the Sun's light is blocked, and the other places get shrouded in darkness. When this happens, it is known as an Eclipse.

The Eclipses That Are Taking Place In 2023

In the upcoming year of 2023, majorly, there will be two Solar Eclipses and one Lunar Eclipse that will occur. Apart from these three Eclipses, there will be a penumbral lunar eclipse occurring as well, however, it is not given the recognition of an Eclipse. Some of the events of Eclipse 2023 would not be visible in India, and it should be given notice that the Sutak period is only valid where the said Eclipse is visible. Out of all the Eclipses 2023, the one that is occurring in India is the Lunar Eclipse. The period of Sutak will be observed for this Lunar Eclipse in India, and other Eclipses would not be visible in India, so their Sutak period would not be credible in any part of the country.

Since we are discussing the eclipse of 2023, you may be wondering what a Solar eclipse, a Lunar eclipse, and a Sutak period, and what their practical meanings are. We shall therefore find all the finer details, including the date, time, and day of these eclipses, below:

Solar Eclipse

A Solar Eclipse is a natural phenomenon that occurs when the Moon passes in between the Earth and the Sun, and as a result of these orbital movements by the planets, the Sun gets blocked fully or partially by the Moon. The light of the Sun gets obscured by the position of the Moon, and the area on which the light was to be shed, gets dark as a consequence of this phenomenon. These planetary movements happen for a specific period of time, and this particular movement is called a Solar Eclipse. A Total Eclipse occurs when the Moon completely shrouds the Sun and blocks its light entirely from reaching the Earth. A Partial Solar eclipse is said to happen when the Moon partially obscures the Sun, and the light is partially blocked as it reaches the Earth. The third type of eclipse also occurs which is known as the Annular Solar Eclipse. In this type of eclipse, the Sun and the Moon are closely in line with each other; when the Moon obscures the Sun, a very bright ring forms around it as the shape of the Moon is smaller than the shape of the Sun.

Lunar Eclipse

A Lunar Eclipse is another naturally occuring spectacular phenomenon, and it happens due to the planetary movements of Earth when it comes in between the Sun and the Moon. Solar Eclipses happen when the Moon comes in between the Earth and the Sun, so, similarly, a Lunar Eclipse occurs when the Earth comes in between these two planets. A Total Lunar Eclipse takes place when the Earth entirely obscures the Moon (as it comes under Earth’s Umbra) and as a result, the entire light of the Sun gets blocked. A Partial Lunar Eclipse occurs when a portion of the Moon gets blocked by the Earth and the third type of Eclipse is known as the Penumbral Lunar Eclipse. In this type of Eclipse, the Moon while revolving around the orbit of the Earth happens to go through its Penumbra (a part of a shadow, as there are three). When such an alignment happens, the Earth blocks the light coming from the Sun and it does not reach the Moon and more than half of its area gets covered by the Earth’s Penumbra.

The Sutak Period Of The Solar & Lunar Eclipse

A Sutak period (the period of temperance) is considered to be an inauspicious period that starts before a few hours of an eclipse and ends after the said eclipse. It is an important period in which engaging in certain work is prohibited. There are different Sutak periods that are observed for Solar Eclipses and Lunar Eclipses. For a Solar Eclipse the period of temperance starts 12 hours prior (4 Peher) to the Eclipse, and for a Lunar Eclipse it starts 9 hours prior (3 Peher) to the Eclipse.

During the Sutak period doing or engaging in auspicious work is strictly prohibited and instead of getting positive results, the chances of negative results get increased. One should take a bath before the start of the eclipse, and should do a Havan on that day. After the end of the eclipse one should take a bath again, and should also donate as special significance has been given. It should be duly noted that one can only be regarded as pure and have their Sutak period properly observed after having a bath following an eclipse. We will discuss in detail about the Solar Eclipse 2023 and Lunar Eclipse 2023 and all the other Eclipses that are going to occur in the upcoming year of 2023.
